Kelly Layman


Kelly Layman lives in Florida and consults on select strategic planning projects, principally for Florida-based U.S. companies and national non-profit organizations. Her holding company—In Layman’s Terms, Inc.—was founded in 1989, and concentrates on economic development and organizational growth projects. She is a partner in, a health care software concern, and a founding investor in a wine academy that trains Master Sommeliers for that coveted international designation. She serves on the Board of Advisors for Apollidon Learning ( She was a principal underwriter of the docu-promo video capturing the inaugural Dream IT. Code IT. Win IT! contest in 2014. Kelly earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida’s nationally ranked journalism program where she also held a media law fellowship. Kelly has served in all three branches of Florida government, most recently as Chief of Staff at two of the largest State agencies in a previous Florida Governor’s administration. She began her career 25 years ago as a journalist/section editor with two daily newspapers. Kelly often gives her time to important philanthropic causes. A Pre-K reading project that she co-founded won a National Points of Light® award in 2000. Northwood University honored her at its annual luncheon with the Arthur E. Turner Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award for Outstanding Public Service. She was named one of 8 “Star Turks” by the Palm Beach Daily News in 2004. Kelly has served as an appointee of the Legislature or Governor on several state committees and commissions. She is currently a Board member for the Florida Gubernatorial Fellows Program
